OUr Story

Turning Tides is for all the young changemakers out there who have ever asked themselves the question “Am I the only one who feels like this?”

The reality is, every single young changemaker I’ve spoken to has wondered this many times throughout their time working in this space. This project is a reminder that we are less alone in this work than we often think.

Turning Tides is also here to give you the resources, tools, and skills that are often expected of young people, though rarely taught. Within these webpages, there is advice from some of the world’s leading change makers on everything from Balancing Work and School to Using Art for Advocacy.

To all the young changemakers out there, who are trying hard and doing their best: your contributions are both needed and wanted, and you are not alone in this.

This project is supported by the National Geographic Society and Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Programs.

JAsmine’s Story

Jasmine Rodman, Founder

Having always enjoyed experimenting with pencil and paint, Jasmine found that combining her love of the ocean and art was a natural combination of her two favourite things. At age 15, she started her own sustainable small business, Ocean Child Creative, using her art to start conversations about the ocean and raise funds for non-profits.

Her advocacy journey continued with joining Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Program’s inaugural cohort of the Future Blue Youth Council, where they worked to create a brand new granting program for young changemakers.  More recently, she has been named a National Geographic Young Explorer, and is a current council member on World Ocean Day’s Youth Advisory Council.

please note

While the word “advocate” is the one used most often on the site, please know that this information is designed to be helpful to not only those who call themselves advocates, but also to anyone who might be taking on a role not often associated with youth. Storytellers, artists, changemakers, writers, athletes, entrepreneurs, and community-builders are all words that have been used by those I’ve spoken to in creating this project. No matter what you call yourself, I hope all the youth who are dedicating time and effort to the things that they are passionate about can benefit from this project.
